Matt Snyder joined the JMU women's lacrosse program as volunteer assistant coach in the fall of 2018 and completed his sixth year as the goalkeepers coach in 2024.
At JMU, Snyder has coached goalies to an elite level including Adanya Moyer, Molly Dougherty and Kat Buchanan.
Moyer was the rock of the 2025 defensive unit which ranked 23rd nationally and first in the AAC in scoring defense (10.21), 19th in country and second in the AAC in scoring margin (3.84), and 21st nationally and first in the AAC in saves percentage (.466). Her confident demeanor between the pipes led JMU to a top-five win over Florida on Mar. 1. She produced single-game career highs in saves (18), goals allowed (6, twice) and save percentage (.625), and has recorded a save percentage of .500 or better in nine outings. She was named AAC Goalkeeper of the Year and First Team All-Conference.
Dougherty earned several All-American honors as JMU goalkeeper. Incredibly, she had a goals against average of fewer than 10 goals per game in every season as a Duke, including the 2019-2022 seasons under Snyder. Buchanan followed that up in 2023 with an 8.08 goals-against average, the program's best GAA for a starter in the shot-clock era. Buchanan finished with a .473 save percentage, 166 saves and picked up 36 ground balls, consistently putting together clutch performances and aggressive play, as JMU surged through a competitive schedule, beating the likes of Maryland, Florida and Virginia.

Snyder relocated to the Valley after spending the past 15 years coaching in the high school ranks in Georgia. Most recently, he was Associate Head Coach at Milton High School from 2008 until 2018, where he helped guide the team to eight state championships, as well as two state runner-up finishes. Milton has consistently been a top-15 nationally-ranked program since 2013, ranking as high as fourth in 2014.
Â
He coached seven goalies to the collegiate ranks, including five going to NCAA Division I programs. Three of the seven were US Lacrosse All-Americans and he has also led 10 goalies to All-State status. In addition to leading the goalkeepers, Snyder also organized the offense and developed and managed the team’s budget and schedule.
Â
Snyder also had coaching stops as Boys Lacrosse Director for Hotlanta Lacrosse (2010-12), Head Girls Lacrosse Coach at Centennial High School (2004-2008) and with the Boys and Girls Club (2004-07).
Â
Aside from coaching, Snyder was the Lacrosse Director for Newtown Recreation from 2011 to 2018 and with Suwanee Sports Academy from 2010 to 2011. He founded and directed Eagle Stix Lacrosse Club in 2008 and is owner and operator of UpTop Sports since 2016.
Â
Snyder graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Kennesaw State in 2005 and is certified both as a youth sports administrator and Special Olympics coach.
