Ashley Langford joined the James Madison women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach in June 2017 and was elevated to Associate Head Coach in August 2020.
"Coach Langford has been a big part of our success," head coach Sean O'Regan said. "She's had her hands in a lot of different areas and this promotion is well deserved. She will continue to be an asset for our program moving forward."
In her first year with the Dukes, Langford helped the team compile a 23-11 record and earn an appearance in the WNIT Third Round.
In her second year, Langford assisted JMU to one of its most successful seasons in program history. She helped the Dukes advance to the WNIT Semifinals for the first time since 2012. The 29 team wins produced tied the program record for wins in a season, while capping off 18 wins in the Convocation Center for a program record and piecing together 31-straight wins at Convo for the second longest streak in JMU history.
Prior to the season getting shutdown early due to COVID-19 concerns, Langford helped coach the team to its third consecutive CAA regular-season title after finishing the year with a 25-4 (16-2 CAA) record in 2019-20.
Primarily working with the guards Langford assisted with the outbreak of freshman Kiki Jefferson who was named CAA Rookie of the Year on nine occasions which is the second-most in CAA history. At the conclusion of the season three of her guards earned all-conference honors in senior Kamiah Smalls (CAA Player of the Year, First Team), senior Jackie Benitez (Second Team) and Jefferson (Rookie of the Year, All-Rookie Team).
Langford was most recently an assistant coach at Old Dominion, serving as floor coach for the guards. Prior to her stop at Norfolk, she was the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach for post players at the U.S. Naval Academy.
She got her coaching start as a graduate assistant at Auburn from 2009-11, overseeing the practice players program while assisting the recruiting and video coordinators. She moved on to Bucknell for the 2011-12 season before heading to Denver for three years, where she coached the guards and developed an offensive scheme for the program.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to join the JMU community and Coach O'Regan's staff,” Langford added. “The tradition of women's basketball here speaks for itself and Coach O has been a vital part of this success. I'm excited to learn and grow under his tutelage. In addition, I look forward to developing these young women on and off the court, as well as capturing another CAA title.”
Langford was a four-year standout guard at Tulane from 2005-09, concluding her career as the all-time assists leader (722). In 2009, she was Conference USA Scholar Athlete of the Year and an all-conference selection. She also completed the WBCA “So You Want to be a Coach” program and served as president of Tulane’s Student Athlete Advisory Council.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in management from Tulane in May 2009 and completed Auburn’s MBA program in May 2011.
