LYNCHBURG, Va. (11/29/1999) – Carl Williams had 24 points to lead five Liberty players in double figures in scoring as JMU suffered its first 1999-2000 loss, 79-70. Liberty went in front to stay late during the first half, built a 59-47 second-half lead and held off a surge that got JMU to within four points during the final three minutes.
Williams hit on only seven of 19 shots from the field but was successful on 10 of 11 free throws. Reserve Chris Caldwell added 16 points, Kenneth Anaebonam 14 points and Delawn Grandison 10 for the Flames.
Jerian Younger's three-point play got JMU to within 67-63 with 2:52 left, but the Dukes got only two more field goals (one with four seconds to play) and hit on only one of four free throws during the final 1:17.
JMU shot a season-low 35.5 percent (22-62), hit on only six of 29 three-point attempts (20.7 percent) and was out-rebounded 45-37. The Dukes converted on only 10 of a possible 23 points from the foul line during the second half.
David Fanning led JMU with a then-career-high 17 points and four assists.
Jabari Outtz added 16 points, Younger a then-career-high 15 and
Jamar Perry 10 for the Dukes.
