RICHMOND, Va. (12/1/1999) – Greg Stevenson scored a game-high 23 points, and Richmond pulled away late during the first half to win the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams, 68-58.
JMU scored the game's first eight points, but Richmond went ahead to stay 16-14 with nine minutes left in the first half and raised the margin to 37-27 at halftime.
Stevenson had 17 first-half points and hit on nine of 14 shots from the field overall. The Penn State transfer also had six rebounds in 33 minutes.
JMU got to within 50-45 on
Jamar Perry's three-point field goal with 9:12 to play, but Richmond scored the next seven points to lead 57-45 with 5:35 left and led by at least seven points the rest of the way.
Kinte Smith, who hit on five straight free throws during the final 2:36, added 15 points and Charles Stephens 12 for Richmond.
JMU got 20 points from
Jabari Outtz and 12 points and 10 rebounds from
Tim Lyle. Outtz hit on nine of 15 shots and Lyle on five of six, but the Dukes shot only 37.7 percent (23-61) overall. Richmond shot 41.8 percent (23-55) and had six three-pointers (17 attempts) to JMU's three (18 attempts).
