CHARLESTON, W.Va. (12/31/1999) – West Virginia broke the game open with 16 straight first-half points and beat JMU 74-50 in the teams' first meeting since 1989-90. The game was a West Virginia "home" contest while renovations were being made to the Mountaineers' on-campus coliseum.
The Mountaineers led 21-15 with 8:20 left in the first half and held JMU scoreless for almost seven minutes while upping the lead to 37-15. They led 39-20 at halftime, and JMU got no closer than 15 points again.
JMU shot a season-low 31.7 percent (19-60) overall and only 28.0 percent (7-25) during the first half. The Dukes hit on only seven of 27 three-point attempts (25.9 percent) in the game and had 11 first-half turnovers.
West Virginia shot 45.9 percent (28-61) to match a JMU-opponent season high and had a 47-34 rebounding edge. The Mountaineers hit on eight of 16 three-point attempts.
Lionel Armstead had five points, including a three-point field goal, during West Virginia's decisive 16-0 burst, and the Mountaineers also got three-pointers from Barry Brooks and Jason D'Alesio while pulling away.
Armstead hit on three of six three-point tries overall and had a game-high 15 points. Chris Moss added 13 points and 10 rebounds and D'Alesio 10 points for West Virginia.
Mickey Dennis and
Rob Strickland had 12 points and
Dwayne Braxton 10 for JMU. Dennis also had a team-high eight rebounds in his second start of the season.
