RALEIGH, N.C. (11/20/2001) – North Carolina State hit on six three-point field goals during the first 10 minutes and went on to beat JMU 75-58 in the Dukes' season-opener.
The host Wolfpack led 27-11 by the 10:00 mark of the first half and by at least eight points the rest of the way. JMU was within 35-25 at halftme and 38-30 two minutes into the second half but was outscored 11-2 during the next 4:30 to trail 49-32 with 13:30 remaining.
After its early outside scoring barrage, North Carolina State finished with only seven three-pointers (18 attempts), but the Wolfpack shot 52.9 percent (27-51) overall, including 60.9 percent (14-23) during the second half.
Anthony Grundy led N.C. State with 24 points, six rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes. He hit on 10 of 12 shots and led four Wolfpack players in double figures in scoring.
JMU was plagued by turnovers, committing 17, including 11 during the first half. The Dukes shot only 33.3 percent (9-27) during the first half but improved to 48.1 percent (13-27) during the final period.
David Fanning led JMU with 16 points, including 13 during the second half.
Ron Anderson added 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
JMU had a 32-23 rebounding advantage.
