HARRISONBURG, Va. (12/5/2001) –
David Fanning had 29 points and
Dwayne Broyles 20, career highs for both, to lead JMU to a 91-75 victory over West Virginia.
JMU improved to 2-2 with its first win over a team from a major conference (Big East) since winning at Mississippi State of the Southeastern Conference early during the 1996-97 season.
The Dukes, who shot only 31 percent in a 71-58 loss to Drexel during their previous game, shot a season-best 53.3 percent (32-60), including 60.0 percent (12 of 20) on three-point tries. JMU's defense held the Mountaineers to 38.2 percent (26-68) shooting overall and 37.0 percent (10-27) from three-point range. The Dukes also had a 44-29 rebounding edge.
Fanning hit on five of six three-point tries as part of a 19-point first-half effort that helped the Dukes to a 48-36 halftime lead. His first three-pointer gave JMU a 7-5 lead, and the Dukes didn't trail again. Broyles followed with back-to-back three-pointers as JMU built a 25-15 lead with 13:30 remaining in the first half.
West Virginia put together a 14-5 run to pull to within 30-29 with seven minutes left in the first half. Jonathan Hargett, the preseason Big East Conference rookie of the year, scored five points and Chris Moss four during the rally.
The Dukes countered with a 10-point burst as Fanning sandwiched layups by
Pat Mitchell and
Chris Williams with a pair of three-pointers, pushing the margin to its widest yet during the contest, 40-29.
Tim Lyle hit on a three-pointer with 0:34 remaining for a 46-36 JMU lead, and Williams added two free throws with 0:02 left to give the Dukes their halftime advantage.
Ian Caskill scored on a layup to give JMU a 50-36 lead to open the second half before the Mountaineers hit for four consecutive three-pointers over the next three minutes. Hargett, who finished with a team-high 24 points, and Josh Yeager had two three-pointers each to get West Virginia to within 50-48.
Broyles scored 10 of the Dukes' next 19 points, capped by a three-pointer assisted by Fanning, for a 69-60 JMU lead with 9:41 remaining. Fanning's final three-pointer extended the lead to 81-69 at 4:12, and Caskill's back-to-back layups with less than three minutes to play all but sealed the win as the Dukes led 85-71 with 2:05 remaining.
Williams finished with a season-high 12 points and five assists, and Fanning had four assists and six rebounds. Mitchell led all players with 11 rebounds and had eight points and two assists. Caskill added season-best totals of eight points and nine rebounds.
