David Fanning led JMU in scoring for the fifth straight game with 23 points as the Dukes won at Liberty for the first time 77-67.
Fanning had 16 first-half points as JMU built a 43-29 lead, and the Dukes held on during the final half for their first road victory of 2001-02. Liberty, which had won the teams' two previous meetings on its home floor, got as close as 53-48 with 10:29 to play and 59-53 with 7:47 remaining, but JMU all but sealed the win with seven straight points.
Fanning hit on a free throw with 6:56 remaining for a 60-53 JMU lead;
Chris Williams had a field goal with 6:35 left; Fanning converted on two free throws with 5:46 to play; and
Dwayne Broyles scored on a tip-in field goal with 5:05 left to give JMU a 66-53 advantage.
JMU won its second straight game despite shooting only 39.7 percent from the field overall (25-63) and 14.3 percent (2-14) from three-point range. The Dukes had a 54-33 rebounding advantage, and Liberty shot only 31.7 percent (19-60) during the contest in which 53 fouls were called. JMU hit on 25 of 34 free throws and Liberty on 26 of 34.
Fanning had JMU's only two three-pointers, both during the first half. Williams added 13 points, a team-high nine rebounds and two blocked shots; Broyles had 12 points and six rebounds; and
Jerian Younger had nine points and four rebounds for the Dukes. Younger hit on four of six shots.
