HARRISONBURG, Va. (2/10/2001) –
Tim Lyle had a three-point field goal and two free throws during the final 3.4 seconds as JMU beat Richmond 66-63.
Lyle's three-pointer with 3.4 seconds left put JMU in front 64-61, and his free throws with 1.5 seconds left all but sealed the win. After Lyle's three-pointer, JMU fouled Richmond's Reggie Brown with 1.5 seconds left and before the Spiders could get off a potential game-tying three-point try. Brown hit both free throws, but Lyle then gave JMU its final points after being fouled before JMU in-bounded the ball.
After leading by eight points late during the first half and 34-32 at halftime JMU trailed but once during the final half. Richmond's Greg Stevenson, the game's top scorer with 20 points, put the Spiders ahead 59-58 on a driving six-footer with 1:55 left. JMU went ahead 61-59 on
Ron Anderson's three-pointer with 1:22 left before Stevenson's short driving jumper pulled Richmond into a 61-61 tie with 27.3 seconds left.
JMU then held the ball until Lyle scored just after an in-bounds play after Richmond's fifth team foul of the final half.
The Spiders led on four occasions during the first eight minutes, but JMU used an 18-9 scoring to lead 31-23 with 2:43 left during the first half. The Dukes led 34-26 before Richmond got the final six points of the half.
David Fanning led JMU with 17 points. He hit on a JMU-individual-season-high five three-pointers and played 36 minutes. Lyle added 12 points and
Chris Williams 11 points and seven assists for the Dukes. Lyle hit on four of five shots.
Stevenson, who hit on eight of 12 shots, was Richmond's only double-figure scorer.
JMU shot 47.8 percent (22-46) overall and tied its season high of nine three-pointers (21 attempts).
Richmond, which had 15 three-pointers in the teams' January game, shot 43.1 percent overall (22-51) and 27.3 percent (6-22) from three-point range.
