HARRISONBURG, Va. (2/21/2001) – Four players had points during a 15-3 scoring burst that gave JMU a 14-point lead with less than four minutes remaining, and the Dukes held off a late William & Mary rally to post a 67-56 victory.
JMU led only 44-42 when
David Fanning's three-point field goal with 10:09 remaining ignited the 15-3 run.
Ron Anderson,
Ian Caskill and
Tim Lyle added four points each as the Dukes raised their margin to 59-45 with 3:55 left.
Turnovers on three straight JMU possessions helped William & Mary get to within 60-55 on Sherman Rivers' layup off a rebound with 1:24 to play; but Lyle scored off a rebound, JMU blocked two Tribe shots, and the Dukes hit on five of eight free throws during the final 1:14 to hold on for the win.
Caskill with 13 points and 12 rebounds and
Chris Williams with 13 points and eight rebounds led JMU. Caskill's scoring and rebounding marks were just one off career highs, and Williams set a career rebounding high. Both also blocked William & Mary shots during the game's final 50 seconds.
Lyle added 11 points and seven rebounds and Fanning 10 points for JMU.
Rivers led all scorers with 18 points, and he also had seven rebounds in 39 minutes. Jim Moran added 13 points for the Tribe.
JMU shot 40.0 percent (22-55) to William & Mary's 33.9 percent (20-59), and the Dukes had a 45-38 rebounding edge. JMU had 21 offensive rebounds and got 17 points immediately following offensive rebounds.
Neither team led by more than four points during a first half that ended with JMU in front 25-21. The Dukes increased their margin to 40-31 by the 14:51 mark of the final half and led 42-33 before Moran had two three-point field goals and Cody Carbaugh one to get the Tribe to within 44-42 with 10:28 to play.
