HARRISONBURG, Va. (1/12/2002) –
David Fanning scored 28 points and
Ron Anderson 15 off the bench to lead JMU to a 68-49 win over Hofstra, snapping a two-game Dukes losing streak.
Fanning scored 22 points during the first half, including 18 on six-of-nine shooting from three-point range. He hit on his first three three-point tries during the opening three minutes as the Dukes took an 11-2 lead. JMU never trailed and maintained a four-to-nine-point margin for much of the first half.
Hofstra pulled to within 26-23 with 3:07 to play before intermission. However, Fanning's basket from the baseline and another of his three-pointers preceded a
Pat Mitchell layup for a 7-0 run that gave JMU its first double-digit lead at 33-23. Anderson's dunk at the buzzer off a rebound gave the Dukes a 35-25 halftime advantage.
JMU opened the second half with a more-balanced offensive attack as five players contributed during a 13-4 run over the first seven minutes, widening its lead to 47-29. The Dukes' rebounding control – 29-18 for the second half and 50-36 overall – was a major factor as the lead swelled to its widest point, 68-40 with 4:48 to play.
Mitchell finished with 12 rebounds and eight points, and
Kenny Whitehead doubled his career high with 10 rebounds while adding five points.
Hofstra had only six second-half field goals (23 shots), shot only 27.1 percent (16-59) overall, and hit on only one of 13 three-point tries. The Pride's overall shooting mark was the worst by a JMU foe since Radford shot a JMU-opponent-record-low 21.4 percent (9-42) during a 73-56 JMU win Jan. 4, 1988 (413 JMU games previously) and the third-worst mark by a JMU foe since the Dukes moved to Division I (1976-77).
JMU hit on 13 of 32 shots during each half and shot 40.6 percent overall and 36.4 percent (8-22) on three-point tries.
Lars Grubler was Hofstra's only double-figure scorer with 11 points. Osei Millar had a team-high nine rebounds.
