WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (1/23/2002) – Adam Hess scored 11 first-half points off the bench as William & Mary overcame a slow start and went on a 77-59 home victory over JMU.
The Tribe hit on only two of its first 16 shots and trailed 10-3 and 12-7 before taking control. William & Mary outscored the Dukes 32-8 during the final 10:32 of the opening half to lead 37-20 and led 49-26 with 14:10 left in the game.
Hess' three-pointer with 10:32 left in the first half started a 13-0 William & Mary burst that turned the 12-7 Tribe deficit into a 20-12 lead by the 6:11 mark. Thomas Viglianco's three-pointer with 9:31 left in the half put William & Mary in front to stay, 13-12, and Nick D'Antoni's three-pointer at the 8:59 mark gave the Tribe a 16-12 edge. Hess added a field goal with 7:14 left in the half and had six points during the final 3:24 of the period.
Hess fininshed with a team-high 15 points to lead four William & Mary players in double figures in scoring. He also had five rebounds and five assists in 27 minutes. Reid Markham added 12 points, and Mike Johnson and D'Antoni 11 each for the Tribe.
William & Mary had a 45-41 rebounding advantage and shot 41.1 percent (23-56) to JMU's 33.3 percent effort (20-60). The Tribe also hit on 23 of 37 free throws to JMU's 13-of-21 effort from the foul line.
Daniel Freeman led JMU with a career-high 15 points in a career-high 24 minutes, and
David Fanning added 11 points for the Dukes. JMU shot only 29.6 percent (8-27) during the first half and hit on only six of 18 three-point field goal attempts overall.
