HARRISONBURG, Va. (1/26/2002) –
Dwayne Broyles had eight points during an 18-11 JMU scoring burst to close the first half, and the Dukes went on to beat Towson 86-75.
After trailing 9-2 and 16-7, JMU rallied to lead five times before Towson took its final advantage at 29-28 with 6:21 left in the opening half.
Jerian Younger's field goal with 6:01 left in the half put the Dukes in front to stay, 30-29, and Broyles hit on consecutive three-point field goals for a 38-33 JMU lead at the 3:18 mark.
The Dukes led 46-40 at halftime and 65-48 with 12:02 to play. Their largest lead was 73-55 with 8:31 left, and Towson got as close as 10 points only once – 76-66 with 4:49 left – the rest of the way.
JMU got the game's first points, but Towson led 9-2 at the 17:26 mark of the first half and 16-7 with 13:14 left.
Broyles had 15 first-half points on six-of-six shooting, including three three-pointers. He finished with a career-high 21 points, and JMU also got 23 points from
David Fanning, a season-high 13 from
Ian Caskill and 10 points and a career-high-tying nine assists from
Chris Williams.
Broyles hit on seven of eight shots and played 37 minutes. Fanning had 12 second-half points and hit on eight of 14 shots, including five of 10 three-point attempts. Caskill, who didn't start for the first time in seven JMU games, hit on three of six shots from the field and seven of eight free throws and had five rebounds and three blocked shots.
JMU shot 52.8 percent (28-53), its best mark in 10 games and its second-best mark of the season. The Dukes also hit on 10 of 17 three-point shots (58.8 percent) and had a season-low nine turnovers.
Towson shot 46.0 percent (29-63) and had a 43-29 rebounding edge, but the Tigers committed 15 turnovers and hit on only 11 of 23 free throws.
JMU played without
Tim Lyle, who missed his fifth straight game with a knee problem, and was without
Pat Mitchell because of a shoulder injury. The Dukes also lost
Jerian Younger late during the game because of a concussion.
Sam Sutton and Brian Allen had 19 points and Gerald Weatherspoon 12 points for Towson.
