CAGUAS, Puerto Rico (12/21/2002) –
Kenny Whitehead had career highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds, and JMU broke the game open with an early-second-half scoring burst in an 88-58 win over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez in the second round of the San Juan Shootout.
Whitehead hit on seven of 10 shots from the field and five of seven free throws and blocked a shot in 25 minutes. Whitehead and
Ian Caskill each had five points as JMU began the second half with a 19-2 scoring burst to raise a 37-28 halftime lead to 56-30 with 14:09 to play.
JMU expanded its margin to 61-32 and the game's final margin was the largest lead of the game.
In addition to Whitehead's best JMU game, the Dukes also got a career-high 15 points and a career-high-tying six rebounds from
Charlie Hatter and a career-high-tying nine points from
Wes Miller. Hatter hit on five of seven shots from three-point range, and Miller, who hit on three of five three-point tries, had nine points for the second straight game and played a career-high 26 minutes. Miller also established a career high with a team-leading five assists.
Eleven JMU players scored – everyone dressed for the game except for starting point guard
Chris Williams – and the Dukes had a season-high 11 three-point field goals in 24 attempts. JMU had a 51-32 rebounding advantage and shot 46.9 percent (30-64) to Puerto Rico-Mayaguez's 32.3 percent (21-65).
Daniel Freeman was JMU's third double-figure scorer with 10 points in 17 minutes off the bench, and Caskill had seven points and 10 rebounds in 12 minutes. Ten Dukes played 10 or more minutes, and no one played more than 26 minutes.
