HARRISONBURG, Va. (2/1/2003) –
Chris Williams' driving shot from the lane with 3:10 to play broke a 69-69 tie, and JMU went on to beat Hofstra 75-69.
JMU held Hofstra scoreless during the final 3:29 and survived a shooting barrage that saw the Pride set a team record and tie a Convocation Center mark for three-point field goals. Hofstra, which hit on 14 of 22 of the long-ranged tries for the game, connected on 10 of 12 three-point tries during the final half while erasing a 37-27 halftime deficit.
The Pride rallied to lead 61-56 with 8:08 left on Gibran Washington's three-pointer but scored only eight more points. JMU got points from five players during the final 7:34 and didn't trail after
Daniel Freeman gave the Dukes a 67-66 lead on a driving layup with 4:46 left.
Ian Caskill's 10-footer made the JMU lead 69-66 with 3:58 remaining before Washington's three-pointer with 3:29 remaining tied the game at 69.
After Williams' tie-breaking field goal, both teams missed on three-point tries and both had turnovers before the 6-foot Freeman blocked a field goal attempt by Hofstra's 6-7 Wendell Gibson. Hofstra rebounded but turned the ball over on a shot-clock violation with 46.6 seconds left.
JMU's
David Fanning missed on a three-point try with the shot clock running down on the next possession, but the Dukes'
Dwayne Broyles rebounded and was fouled with 10.5 seconds left. He hit on both attempts of the one-and-one opportunity and then scored off a dunk with 6.5 seconds left after making a steal soon after Hofstra in-bounded the ball.
Fanning had 13 first-half points, and Hofstra had 15 turnovers while JMU was taking its 37-27 halftime lead. JMU's lead was 12 after the Dukes got the first field goal of the second half, but Hofstra shot 57 percent overall (16-28) during the final 20 minutes. The Pride's first lead of the second half was 55-54 on Kenny Adeleke's dunk with 10:02 to play.
Fanning led JMU with 18 points, and Caskill and Williams each had 17 and Broyles 11 for the Dukes, who shot 50 percent (27-54).
