WILMINGTON, N.C. (2/5/2003) – North Carolina Wilmington went in front for the first time with a 12-0 scoring run late in the game and sealed a 73-62 home win at the foul line.
JMU scored the game's first 10 points, led by as many as 12 points and was up 56-51 with 6:24 left before league-leading UNC Wilmington took control. The Seahawks went in front for the first time 57-56 on an Anthony Terrell free throw with 4:16 remaining and scored their last 18 points from the foul line. UNC Wilmington hit on 18 of 19 free throws during the final 4:16 and on 33 of 41 attempts overall. JMU hit on seven of 10 free throws for the game.
JMU went from the 6:24 mark of the second half to the 1:53 mark without scoring while UNC Wilmington used its 12-0 scoring burst to open a 63-56 advantage.
JMU had 11 three-point field goals but shot only 41 percent overall (22-54). UNC Wilmington shot 52 percent (11-21) during the final half while erasing a 31-25 halftime deficit and a 35-25 deficit with 18:52 left. The Seahawks shot 38 percent (18-47) overall but had only seven turnovers while JMU committed 17. JMU had a 36-30 rebounding advantage.
Brett Blizzard had 23 of his game-high 29 points during the second half to lead UNC Wilmington's rally. He hit on seven of eight shots during the last half, including three three-pointers, and also had seven rebounds, two assists and two steals overall. Blizzard hit on only one of nine shots during the first half.
JMU got 24 points from
David Fanning and 14 from
Kenny Whitehead. Fanning had six three-pointers in 12 attempts, two assists and two steals, and Whitehead hit on seven of 11 shots and had seven rebounds.
JMU led 10-0 at 16:35 mark of the opening half and 28-16 with five minutes left before halftime. Fanning had 11 points during the first half, including nine on three-pointers, and Whitehead had eight points and four rebounds and
Ian Caskill six points and seven rebounds before halftime. Caskill played only three minutes during the second half because of foul problems.
