HARRISONBURG, Va. (2/8/2003) –
David Fanning and
Dwayne Broyles each scored 27 points, and JMU erased a 12-point second-half deficit to beat Old Dominion 74-66 and avenge a loss earlier during the season to the Monarchs.
Broyles scored 24 of his career-high points during the second half to help the Dukes overcome a 46-34 deficit with 13:30 remaining. He hit six of his career-best seven three-pointers during the period and overall hit on eight of 11 shots and on seven of nine three-point tries. He also hit on each of four free throws, grabbed five rebounds and had three assists.
Broyles' final three-pointer with 6:15 to play gave the Dukes a 55-54 edge, their first advantage since leading 16-14 at the 10:03 mark of the first half. The lead changed hands three times over the next 1:18 before Fanning hit on both ends of a two-shot foul chance with 4:45 left, giving JMU the lead for good, 59-58.
Fanning scored seven of JMU's final 11 points, including two free throws that put the Dukes up 70-66 with 23.3 seconds left. After Old Dominion's 15th turnover, JMU's
Ian Caskill sank two free throws with 11.5 seconds left for a 72-66 Dukes advantage. Fanning completed the scoring with a dunk at the buzzer after passing to himself off the backboard.
JMU shot 55 percent (16-29) during the second half and finished with a 42 percent shooting mark (24-57) after hitting on only eight of 28 first-half shots (29 percent). Old Dominion shot 38 percent (21-56).
JMU hit on 11 of 23 three-point field goal attempts (48 percent) after hitting for 11 three-pointers in 28 attempts (39 percent) during their previous game (a 73-62 loss at North Carolina Wilmington).
The game was the first of the season that JMU won after trailing at halftime, and the 12-point deficit the Dukes overcame was the largest from they had rallied to win a 2002-03 contest.
Broyles' and Fanning's combined scoring effort marked the first time since Jan. 30, 1999 (Chatney Howard 29, Jabari Outtz 25 in an 82-78 loss at George Mason) that two Dukes had scored as many as 25 points in a game. The game was the first in which two JMU players scored as many as 27 points since Roger Hughett (1975-79) scored 36 and Steve Stielper (1976-80) 30 in a 96-83 home win over Catholic Feb. 2, 1977.
Fanning hit on eight of 16 shots overall and on four of nine three-point attempts and had five assists.
Caskill joined Broyles and Fanning in double-figure scoring with 10 points. He also grabbed 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.
Old Dominion had a balanced offense with seven players contributing to a 33-24 halftime advantage. The margin was 12 on four occasions during the second half.
Rasheed Wright led the Monarchs with 17 points, and John Waller had 16 points and seven rebounds and Ricardo Marsh 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
