NEWARK, Del. (1/12/2004) – Delaware's Mike Slattery scored seven straight points after the score was tied at 55 to lead the Blue Hens to an 80-66 victory.
Slattery broke the 55-55 tie with a three-point field goal with 7:10 left. He added two free throws with 6:35 to play after making a steal and two more free throws with 5:59 remaining for a 62-55 Delaware lead before David Lunn's dunk completed a 9-0 burst and gave the Blue Hens a 64-55 lead.
Chris Williams pulled JMU to within 64-57 with a field goal with 5:28 left, but Mike Ames' three-pointer with 5:13 remaining gave Delaware a 67-57 advantage and JMU didn't get closer than nine points again.
JMU survived a seven-minute scoring drought during the first half to take the lead on four occasions after halftime, the last at 54-53 on two
Dwayne Broyles free throws with 9:17 to play. Broyles hit on one of two foul shots to forge the 55-55 tie with 8:09 left, but the Dukes then went 2:41 without scoring.
Ames had 15 points during the opening eight minutes of the second half and led Delaware with 28 points, including 18 on three-point shots. Harding Nana added 22 points and nine rebounds and Slattery 14 points and nine assists. Nana had 14 first-half points while Slattery collected but five points before scoring his seven straight crucial second-half points.
Delaware had a 36-24 rebounding advantage and hit on 22 of 26 free throws (84.6 percent).
JMU got a career-high 19 points from
Daniel Freeman in his second start of the season.
David Cooper and Williams each added 13 points for the Dukes. Freeman hit on seven of 11 shots and Cooper on five of eight.
