HARRISONBURG, Va. (2/25/2004) – Tim Whitworth broke a 57-57 tie with a three-pointer with 14.4 seconds to play, and Drexel held to beat JMU 62-59.
JMU, which erased a nine-point deficit during the final 12 minutes, used two timeouts with 10 seconds remaining, but
Cavell Johnson couldn't hit on a three-point attempt to tie the score.
Ray Barbosa got an immediate stick-back layup off Johnson's miss to get the Dukes to within 60-59, but only a half second remained.
JMU fouled Bashir Mason before the ball was in-bounded, and he hit on two free throws for the final margin. JMU then tried a three-quarter-court heave to Johnson, but he was heavily guarded and didn't get to attempt a desperation shot.
Drexel had built the game's largest margin, 45-36, with 12:18 remaining when Whitworth hit on a three-pointer, but the Dragons didn't get another field goal's until Whitworth hit with 14.4 seconds to play.
Dwayne Broyles had eight points,
Daniel Freeman six and
Ray Barbosa five as JMU rallied and finally pulled even at 57-57 on two Freeman free throws with 50 seconds left. Drexel's ensuing possession was extended by a kicked ball, and the Dragons eventually got the ball to Whitworth in the right corner for his fourth three-pointer of the game.
JMU went 7-for-8 from the free throw line during its comeback, and those were all of the free throws the Dukes shot for the game. JMU's first trip to the foul line came with 8:18 remaining.
JMU had first-half leads of 8-2 and 21-13, but Drexel rallied to lead 24-23 behind five first-half three-pointers. The teams were tied at 26-26 at halftime, and Drexel trailed for only 21 seconds of the final half.
Playing in his final home game, JMU's
Dwayne Broyles led all scorers with 20 points and shared game-high rebounding honors with eight. Barbosa added 18 points and six rebounds and Freeman 10 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Dukes.
Chris Williams also made his final JMU home appearance. In his 100th-career start, he had two points, two assists and one steal.
Whitworth led three Dragons in double figures in scoring with 17 points. Sean Brooks added 14 points and Mason 11.
