TOWSON, Md. (2/28/2004) – JMU went nearly eight minutes without scoring to start the second half and fell in its final game of the regular season, 74-54 at Towson.
The Dukes used a 15-0 first-half scoring burst to overcome a 24-13 deficit and lead 36-32 at intermission. However, JMU didn't get its initial points of the second half until 12:15 remained in the game and went nearly 14 minutes of the final half with only one field goal.
Towson scored the first 11 points of the final half to lead 43-36 with 13:38 left and led 61-43 with 7:20 to play. JMU shot but 14.8 percent (4-27) during the final half after shooting 42.4 percent and hitting for six three-point field goals during the opening period. The Dukes didn't have a second-half three-pointer.
The host Tigers during the second half shot 50.0 percent (11-22) overall and 66.7 percent (6-9) from three-point range. They out-rebounded JMU 46-33 for the game and blocked 10 JMU shots.
Jamaal Gilchrist led Towson's second-half surge with 17 points, including 12 on three-pointers. He also had eight rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and a steal in 35 minutes.
Ray Barbosa led JMU with 22 points. He had 19 points, including 12 on three-point field goals, during the opening half.
Daniel Freeman added 10 points and five rebounds,
Dwayne Broyles eight points, and
Cavell Johnson seven points and a career-high seven rebounds for the Dukes.
