LAMBERT, CHALFANT GAIN THREE WINS IN CAA WRESTLING DUALS
FAIRFAX, Va. (1/23/05) – The James Madison wrestling team won one of four matches in the Colonial Athletic Association Duals, hosted Jan. 21-22 by George Mason University. JMU's win came its second match of the day on Saturday in a 47-5 verdict against Wagner. The Dukes losses were against Boston University (39-3) Friday, and Sacred Heart (30-13) and Rider (35-9) Saturday.
JMU senior Brian Lambert (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) improved his record to 14-5 by rolling to three victories. The 174-pounder accounted for the Dukes' only points against Boston University's Terriers with a 6-0 decision against Warren Haines. He scored a major decision with an 18-5 walloping of Sacred Heart's Greg Cappello. Lambert, who pushed his CAA record to 4-1 and dual mark to 7-2, registered his third pin of the season only 48 seconds into his bout with Anthony Pontoriero of Wagner.
Sophomore Jason Chalfant (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) won both of his contested matches and picked up a forfeit victory to go 3-1 for the weekend. He posted a 10-7 decision against Dan Keefe of Sacred Heart and a 9-4 decision versus Joe Maroney of Rider. Chalfant's lone setback came in overtime, a 3-1 final against Boston's Thomas Storza. He came out of the event with a 3-3 CAA mark, 5-7 dual record and 5-11 overall ledger. Other notable outcomes include pins by freshman 165 Chris Gwaltney (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) and redshirt junior heavyweight Chris Cvitan (Montville, N.J./Montville Township) against Wagner. Freshman 133 Shawn Horst (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) also scored bonus points against the Seahawks, registering his first career technical fall and gaining his first CAA triumph. Freshman 125 Thang Ho (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church) also tallied his first CAA win. Next on the Dukes' slate is a trip to Dover, Del. for the Delaware State University Duals. JMU will meet Duke University, York College, Johns Hopkins and the host Hornets in the day-long event which gets underway at 10 a.m. | |||
