DIAMOND DUKES CLIP WAGNER SEAHAWKS TWICE, 5-4, 3-2
Box Scores - Game 1 | Game 2
The Dukes, winners of three in a row and four of five, came from behind and won the opener 5-4, and they improved their overall ledger to 5-10. The Seahawks slipped to 4-8.
Reid (1-1) limited the Seahawks to five hits through the first six frames before sophomore first baseman Kris Urbano (Freehold Township, N.J./C.B.A.) and junior second baseman Joseph Malfettano (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) sandwiched an infield out with a pair of singles to break up the shutout bid.
JMU junior right-hander Patrick Riley (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) came on to register the final two outs to notch the save, his first of the season and second of his career. Riley's outs came on an RBI groundout and a strikeout.
Reid had eight strikeouts for the second time this season and did not walk a batter.
The Dukes jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Doom connected for his third homer of the season, and his second this season in a JMU first inning. Santobianco, who finished 3-for-3, made it 3-0 in the fourth with a single through the left side of the infield.
In the opener, junior second baseman Michael Cowgill (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) lofted a fly ball into right-center to allow pinch-runner Rob Altieri (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) to score the winning run from third for a comeback win. Altieri was running for Santobianco, who led off the inning with a standup double to left.
The Seahawks had built a 3-0 lead after three innings. Sophomore left fielder Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central) tripled in the first of two runs in the first inning and scored on sacrifice fly by first baseman Troy Sogluizzo. Sogluizzo cracked a solo homer in the third.
JMU freshman left fielder Kellen Kulbacki (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) homered in the fourth to get the Dukes on the board. A two-run double over the bag at third by Cowgill, followed by a triple from junior third baseman Nate Schill (Audubon, N.J./Audubon), gave the Dukes a 4-3 lead.
Sogluizzo tied the game once again with a groundout to shortstop in the eighth. Sophomore shortstop Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) scored the run after doubling to begin the inning and advancing to third in a Mastrianni roller to second. Sophomo | |||
