DUKES SPLIT WITH PENN STATE IN BASEBALL
Box Score Game 2 HARRISONBURG, Va. (3/26/05) – Junior left-hander Sean Stidfole (New Bloomfield, Pa./Susquenita) tossed a four hitter and sophomore center fielder Travis Laird's (Conneaut Lake, Pa./Conneaut Lake) RBI double provided the difference as Penn State (8-7) took the nightcap, 3-2, and earned a split in a doubleheader at James Madison (7-12) Saturday afternoon. The Dukes pounded out a season-high 18 hits to run away with the opener, 12-3.
Stidfole went the distance for his second consecutive start and improved to 3-2. He struck out three, walked one and two of the four hits he allowed came in the first inning.
Junior left fielder Lance Thompson (Brisbin, Pa./Moshannon) and senior first baseman Clint Eury (Butler, Pa./Butler) accounted for half the Nittany Lions' eight hits as each produced two. Thompson's double in the third inning gave the visitors a 2-0 lead. Eury singled with one out in the sixth and raced home from first base on Laird's two-bagger.
The Dukes pulled to within 2-1 in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by junior third baseman Nate Schill (Audubon, N.J./Audubon). Freshman pitcher/designated hitter Ryan Reid (Portland, Maine/Deering) hit a solo homer to start the sixth to once again get the Dukes within a run, 3-2. JMU was retired in order in the seventh.
Reid was tagged with the loss and slipped to 1-2. He worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs, eight hits and one walk, and he struck out four.
The Dukes engineered their single-biggest inning of the season, scoring seven times on as many hits in the fourth frame, and rolled to the win in the opener. No hit produced more than one run in the outburst.
All nine JMU starters hit safely in the game, including Schill's 3-for-5 performance that extended his hit streak to eight games before being snapped in the nightcap. The Dukes also received three-hit outings from freshman left fielder Kellen Kulbacki (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) and sophomore shortstop Davis Stoneburner (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin). Kulbacki smacked a pair of doubles, giving him a team-high 10 on the season. Schill and Stonebuner each had a pair of RBI.
Making his first start of the season after recovering from an injury, junior left-hander Greg Nesbitt (Drumore, Pa./Solanco) earned the mound victory by going the first five frames. PSU managed seven hits, a pair of walks and two runs. Nesbitt whiffed one batter. | |||
