LASKO, DUKES TOPPLE VCU 12-4 IN CAA BASEBALL
HARRISONBURG, Va. (4/2/05) – Sophomore right-hander Bobby Lasko (Athens, Pa./Athens Area) scattered six hits over eight innings and received ample offensive support from the first inning on as James Madison defeated Virginia Commonwealth, 12-4, in Colonial Athletic Association baseball Saturday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
The Dukes evened the three-game series while snapping a five-game losing skid. The Dukes are 8-16 overall and 1-1 in the CAA. VCU slipped to 15-6 overall and 3-2 in league play. The rubber game is Sunday at 1 p.m.
Lasko improved to 2-4 on the season and to 2-0 alltime against the Rams. His eight innings of work on Saturday was the longest by a JMU pitcher this season. He gave up only one run and struck out a career-high eight. The only blemish on his line was the six walks allowed. Last year against VCU, Lasko came out of the pen in emergent relief and went 6 1/3 innings, giving up just two hits, in a 3-0 JMU victory at The Diamond in Richmond.
JMU junior third baseman Nate Schill (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) launched an opposite-field, three-run homer to right to begin a 3-for-5, five RBI afternoon as the Dukes jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Schill also singled in a run in the second inning, contributing to another four-run frame.
Also for JMU, freshman center fielder Kellen Kulbacki (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) drove in a pair of runs with a 2-for-3 outing, and junior first baseman Matt Bristow (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) had a pair of hits and one RBI. Junior left fielder Skyler Doom (Yorktown, Va./Yorktown) dropped in a pair of hits and walked twice.
The Rams, who committed four errors, got two hits each from sophomore second baseman Scott Sizemore (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and freshman shortstop Sergio Miranda (Puerto Rico).
Sophomore right-hander John Leonard (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) was tagged with the loss, dropping to 2-1. He was chased in the second inning after giving up six runs on four hits and four walks. |
