VCU RALLIES FOR 10-7 CAA BASEBALL WIN AT JMU
Box Score
The Rams overcame a 7-3, seventh-inning deficit to take two of three games in the series. VCU moved to 16-6 overall and 4-2 in the CAA. JMU fell to 8-17 overall, 1-2 in CAA play.
Miranda, who went 3-for-6, sent a 3-2 pitch on a soft liner into shallow left field, plating sophomore pinch runner Harold Mozingo (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) from second base. Mozingo was running for sophomore designated hitter Tim St. Clair (Woodbridge, Va./Chesapeake C.C.), who led off the frame with an infield hit up the middle. Sizemore followed with a blast off the top of the fence in center field, just missing his second homer of the day, for a two-run triple. He tried to make it an in-the-park homer, but was thrown out at the plate.
The Dukes were a whisker away from never being in the ninth-inning jam when sophomore pitcher Travis Risser (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) nearly pulled off a double play on a popped up bunt. Risser, who took the loss (4-2), dove to catch junior third baseman Barrett Ripley's (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) bunt, but his throw to first was just behind Mozingo's return to the bag. Junior Joe Meador (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) then reached on an infield single to set up Miranda's game-winner.
The Rams rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth. A bases-loaded walk to senior first baseman Alex Gary (Charlotte, N.C./Western Carolina) brought the Rams to within 7-5. Senior catcher Pete Farina (West Los Angeles, Calif./University) sent a seeing-eye single through the middle for two RBI to tie the contest.
Farina ended the day 3-for-5 with four RBI. Freshman left fielder Kwan Evans (Hampton, Va./Bethel) also had a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Sizemore connected for his league-leading ninth homer with a solo shot in the seventh inning.
Freshman right-hander Brett Walker (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) gained the win with two innings of one-hit relief. He struck out one and improved to 2-1. Junior left fielder Skyler Doom (Yorktown, Va./Yorktown) paced JMU with a career best four hits. Junior third baseman Nate Schill (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and sophomore shortstop Davis Stoneburner (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) went 2-for-4. | |||
