DUKES PULL AWAY FOR 11-6 BASEBALL WIN AGAINST LONGWOOD
Box Score
Schill, who finished 1-for-5, connected for a two-run double in the eighth as the Dukes pulled away from what had been a tight affair for much of the afternoon. His other RBI came in the third on an infield out, part of a four-run inning in which the Dukes mustered only one hit, but took the lead for good, 5-4. Schill leads the club with 28 RBI.
Freshman designated hitter Joe Lake's (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) groundout scored junior second baseman Michael Cowgill (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) from third base with the go-ahead run in the third inning.
Senior right-hander Brian Leatherwood (Norfolk, Va./Granby) earned the win on the mound with five innings during his second start of the season. He evened his season's record to 1-1 and picked up the 10th win of his career. Leatherwood gave up three earned runs on seven hits and a walk, and he struck out two Lancers.
Sophomore David Rich (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppague) tossed the final three innings to earn the first save of his career. He allowed only two hits, the second being a pinch-hit solo homer to freshman Travis Lydon (Westlake, Ohio/St. Edward) in the top of the ninth.
JMU sophomore shortstop Davis Stoneburner (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) went 2-for-4 with one RBI and has hit safely in 13 of the last 14 games. Cowgill added a pair of hits, including his eighth double, and has reached base in 17 straight games. Santobianco's solo homer, the first of his of two hits, started the afternoon's scoring in the second inning, and it was his first home run of the year. Freshman center fielder Kellen Kulbacki (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) tacked on a pair of singles to the winning cause.
Sophomore designated hitter Tyler Childress (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) was Longwood's only player to collect more than one hit, as he went 3-for-5.
The Dukes venture to Radford University on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. contest against the Highlanders. Longwood hosts Appalachian State, also at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
