HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Oct. 13, 2006 -- Senior forward
Michael Todd (Cleveland, England) scored his 10th goal of the season as Hofstra captured a 1-0 win over #23 (NSCAA) James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer Friday evening at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
The Pride improved its record to 7-4-2, including 4-2-1 in the CAA. Â JMU slipped to 8-3-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the CAA. Â Â The Dukes are winless (0-2-2) in their last four matches.
The game-winning goal was scored when freshman midfielder
Rory McCrea (Sherburn-In-Elmet, England) made a run up the center of the field. Â He played a through ball to Todd, who got alone in behind the defense. Â JMU red-shirt senior goalkeeper
Kevin Trapp (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) came out to try to stop the play and nearly smothered the ball off Todd's foot near the top of the penalty area. Â The ball rolled forward, though, and Todd stumbled for a split second before gaining his balance and chasing the ball down, slotting a six-yard shot into the empty net with 6:58 left in the first half.
Hofstra freshman goalie
James Winters (Austin, Texas), starting his third game in place of injured starter Tom Johansen, had three saves for his first collegiate shutout. Winters stopped a 12-yard shot from sophomore
Kyle Morsink (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln)in the 18th minute and tipped a dangerous bending free kick from senior
Kurt Morsink (San Jose, Costa Rica/IMG) over the bar in the 82nd minute to preserve the shutout.
In the 86th minute Hofstra senior defender
Gary Flood (Hauppauge, N.Y.) deflected a potentially dangerous 10-yard header from JMU senior
Mark Totten (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) before it could reach goal.
The Pride held a 10-6 advantage in shots for the game, as well as a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Trapp finished with five saves for the Dukes.
JMU, ranked fourth nationally in scoring offense entering the game (2.64 goals per game), was shut out for the first time this season.
