HARRISONBURG, Va., Nov. 5, 2006 - Hofstra University clinched first place in the Colonial Athletic Association regular season and the right to host the championship tournament with a 3-0 sweep of host James Madison University on Sunday in Sinclair Gymnasium.

HU (19-6, 15-1 CAA) defeated JMU (18-8, 12-5 CAA) by game scores of 30-28, 30-28, and 30-26. The Pride improved to 13-4 all-time against the Dukes.

JMU jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the opening game only to see Hofstra tie it up at 12-12. The Dukes managed to go back up as much as six at 22-16 and held a 24-21 lead only to see the Pride reel off a five-point scoring run with senior Beverly Rivera (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) at serve. JMU managed to tie it at 26-26, but HU went on for the 30-28 win.

Game two was tight throughout with neither team holding a lead of more than four points. The Pride appeared to be in control 27-23 only to see the Dukes score the next four points, thanks in part to three consecutive attack errors by the Pride. With HU holding a 29-28 edge, sophomore Lauren Engle (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) recorded a kill for the game winner.

Hofstra dominated most of the third game, jumping out to a 20-11 advantage. JMU managed to gradually chip away and pulled within two at 26-24 but could get no closer as HU won 30-26.

Engle led the Hofstra attack with 14 kills and eight digs. Senior Elizabeth Curley (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) added 11 kills and hit .346. Junior setter Shellane Ogoshi (Honolulu, Hawaii/Roosevelt) collected 35 assists with six kills and five digs. Rivera narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs. Senior libero Catherine Durakis (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) added 14 digs.

JMU was led by junior Allyson Halls (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy) who tallied 14 kills and four blocks. Senior Hanna Porterfield (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) added nine kills and four digs. Sophomore setter Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) accumulated 34 assists to pass Kari Kopnicky for fifth in season assists with 1,257. Junior libero Jena Pierson (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison) registered 20 digs while senior Bayli Stillwell (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Steamboat Springs) and freshman Stephanie Waters (Gainesville, Fla./P.K. Yonge) added 12 and 10 respectively.

JMU will close the regular season on Friday, Nov. 10 with a 7 p.m. home match against George Mason University.
