HARRISONBURG, Va., March 14, 2006 – Redshirt junior catcher Dan Santobianco (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) clubbed two of James Madison's four home runs to help power the Dukes to a 15-5 victory against Virginia Tech Tuesday in non-conference college baseball at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
JMU, with a 19-hit attack, won its 12th in a row to improve to 12-4 overall while snapping a three-game losing streak in its series with the Hokies. The streak is the longest enjoyed by the program since the 1988 squad won 14 in a row en route to a 43-win season. Only Wichita State's 13-game win streak heading into Tuesday night's game at Kansas State is longer among active streaks in Division I.
The Hokies, who host the Dukes at 3 p.m. Wednesday (March 15), have dropped five in a row, to dip below .500 at 7-8 after a 7-3 start.Â
Santobianco started the Dukes' offense with a solo homer for the only earned run in a five-run second inning. Sophomore center fielder Kellen Kulbacki (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) capped off the frame with a two-run homer, giving him eight for the season to lead the Dukes and matching his total output during his freshman year.
Senior designated hitter Nate Schill's (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) two-run shot to right-center in the second gave the Dukes a 7-0 advantage. Schill, who earlier extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games, finished the day 3-for-3, and the homer was his career-best seventh of the season.
The Dukes continued to poor it on in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run blast to left field by Santobianco for a 10-1 JMU lead. It was his third homer of the season and the 27th of his career, moving him to a tie for 11th place all time at JMU.Â
Kulbacki, who entered the day tied for the RBI lead among Colonial Athletic Association players, added three Tuesday to give him 30 for the season. He went 4-for-4 at the plate to raise his batting average to .500.
JMU junior shortstop Davis Stoneburner (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) also had a productive day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
The top hitters for the Hokies were sophomore catcher Jose Rojas (Patterson, N.J./Eastside), who was 3-for-4 with one RBI, and sophomore right fielder Jose Cueto (Miami, Fla./Braddock) with a 2-for-4 day with one RBI.
