DURHAM, N.C., May 20, 2006 -- Top-seeded Duke (18-2) held James Madison (15-5) without a goal for more than 30 minutes en route to a 16-6 victory in the NCAA Lacrosse Tournament quarterfinals at Koskinen Stadium Saturday afternoon.
JMU, ranked 13th nationally, saw its a seven-game winning streak end. The Dukes fell one victory short of matching their season mark for wins.
The Dukes jumped off to an early 2-1 lead. Sophomore Julie Stone (Annandale, Va./Annandale) scored off a pass from senior Brooke McKenzie (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) just 38 seconds into the game. Following a Blue Devil goal at 26:44, junior Kelly Berger (Columbia, Md./Hammond) converted a free-position attempt at 25:56 to put JMU up 2-1.
JMU senior goalkeeper Livvy King (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) stopped Duke's next three shots. But a goal by junior Leigh Jester (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) with 19:17 left started a run of seven straight Blue Devil goals that sent Duke into halftime holding an 8-2 advantage.
Duke opened the second half by outscoring JMU 3-1 to lead 11-3 at the 21:00 mark. The Blue Devils were ahead 16-3 before JMU scored three times in the final 7:00 for the final 16-6 margin.
Berger and junior Lynlea Cronin (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) each scored two goals for the Dukes. JMU got one-goal each from sophomore Emily Haller (Fallston, Md./John Carroll) and sophomore Julie Stone (Annandale, Va./Annandale).
Duke was led by sophomore Caroline Cryer (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) with four goals and two assists. Junior Rachel Sanford (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Jester each scored three goals.
JMU's King finished with seven saves, while Duke starting senior goalkeeper Megan Huether (Lutherville, Md./Maryville Prep) made nine saves and allowed four goals in just under 55 minutes of play.
Duke advances to the NCAA semifinals to face Northwestern, a 17-6 quarterfinal-round winner over North Carolina.
