HARRISONBURG, Va., August 25, 2006 - James Madison University won both its matches on the opening day of the 2006 JMU Days Inn Volleyball Invitational, defeating Canisius College 3-0 and Duquesne University 3-0.
JMU (2-0) was the only team to win both its matches on the day. The Dukes defeated Canisius (1-1) by game scores of 30-20, 30-20, and 30-19. JMU defeated the Dukes of Duquesne (1-1) by game scores of 32-30, 30-27, and 30-15.
In other matches, it was Canisius opening the day with a 3-2 win over UNC Asheville (0-2) 28-30, 30-23, 26-30, 30-24, and 16-14. In the second match, Duquesne defeated Rutgers University (1-1) 30-23, 37-39, 30-18, and 30-28. Rutgers rebounded to later defeat UNC Asheville 30-18, 30-25, 26-30, and 37-35.
Against Canisius, junior Allyson Halls (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy) led the attack with 11 kills and had four total blocks. Senior Hanna Porterfield (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) contributed 10 kills on .409 hitting. Sophomore setter Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory) had 33 assists and 11 digs. Senior Bayli Stillwell (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) contributed eight kills, 11 digs, and five block assists. Junior Jena Pierson (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison) added 13 digs. Freshman Michelle Godfrey (N. Tonawanda, N.Y./N. Tonawanda) led the attack for the Griffs with nine kills.
Against Duquesne, Stillwell registered a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs. Miles had a strong performance with seven kills, 38 assists, and eight digs. Pierson tallied a match-high 23 digs and Porterfield knocked down 12 kills. For the Dukes of Duquesne, senior Amanda Haeg (New Prague, Minn./New Prague) accumulated 10 kills and 17 digs for a double-double. Sophomore Laura Kastein (Huntsville, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) also had 17 digs while junior Jenni Gross (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele) tallied 12 kills. Junior setter Kristin Garnett (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) had 29 assists.
With the two victories, JMU head coach Disa Garner now sits at 99 wins as head coach of the Dukes. She will go for #100 at 11:30 a.m. Saturday as JMU hosts UNC Asheville. In Saturday's other matches, Canisius will face Duquesne at 9 a.m. Rutgers will face Canisius at 2 p.m. Duquesne will square off with UNC Asheville at 4:30 p.m. Finally, JMU will close the day hosting
