HARRISONBURG, Va., Friday, Sept. 15 - Senior Bayli Stillwell (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Steamboat Springs) and junior Allyson Halls (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy) contributed 13 points each to lead James Madison University to a 3-0 win over Georgia State University in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball in Sinclair Gymnasium.
JMU (5-5, 1-2 CAA) defeated GSU (3-6, 1-2 CAA) by game scores of 30-26, 30-27, and 30-21. The Dukes compiled a .301 team attack percentage, including .387 in the final game with a 72% sideout success rate.
In the first game, JMU built the lead to as much as 10 at 23-13 and later led 29-19 before GSU mounted a furious rally attempt, prompting a pair of JMU timeouts. The rally was aided by three JMU attack errors, a service error, and two service aces by junior Ana Paula Ferreira (Paranagua, Brazil/Colegia III Milenio). Following the final JMU timeout, Halls ended the rally attempt with a kill.
The second game stayed tight through the first half of the game with eight ties and three lead changes. The Panthers grabbed the lead at 9-8 and still led at 18-17. JMU took its first lead at 19-18 in the midst of a service run by senior Amanda Snead (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin), which ended in a 22-18 JMU advantage. The JMU lead never dipped below three the rest of the way.
The Dukes took charge in game three, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. The Panthers pulled within one at 10-9, but JMU eventually pulled back out to a 19-12 edge and never looked back, breezing to a 30-21 win. There were no ties or lead changes in the final game.
Stillwell finished with 12 kills on .391 hitting with six digs. Halls tallied 11 kills and three blocks while hitting .318. Sophomore Michelle Johnson (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) was particularly effective with a team-high .467 attack percentage (9-2-15). Freshman Nicole Fenner (Duluth, Ga./Wesleyan) hit .316 with eight kills and 10 digs. Sophomore setter Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) recorded 42 assists and eight digs while junior Jena Pierson (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison) hauled in 16 digs.
Ferreira led the Panthers with eight kills, a .294 attack percentage, four service aces, 10 digs, and six total blocks. Junior Amy Lusk (West Plains, Mo./Missouri State-West Plains) had seven kills, eight digs, and three blocks. GSU hit just .096 as a team but was effective at the net with nine total blocks.
JMU will continue CAA play Saturday night at 7 p.m. by hosting UNC Wilmington.
