FORT COLLINS, Colo., Saturday, Sept. 2 – Jessica Furlong (St. Augustine, Fla./Pedro Mendez) had a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs to lead Wake Forest University to a 3-0 win over James Madison University in the second day of the 2006 Coors Invitational at Colorado State University.
WFU (1-1) defeated JMU (4-2) by game scores of 30-28, 30-28, and 30-24. The Dukes grabbed an early lead in the first game and went up as much as 16-11, but the Demon Deacons battled back to tie it at 19-19. With the score tied 24-24, WFU pulled away with back-to-back kills and went on for a 30-28 game one win.
The Demon Deacons carried the momentum into game two with a quick 4-0 start. After going up 12-6, junior Jena Pierson (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison) served the Dukes on a five point run to pull within one. After four lead changes and 11 ties, the last at 28-28, WFU put the game away with a kill by Jenna Doane (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) followed by a block from Jackie Lucas (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) and Michael Faulkner (Austin, Texas/St. Michael's Academy).
Game three was tight in the beginning until the Demon Deacons pulled away from an 11-11 tie to score the next three points. They went on to build a lead as large as seven at 27-20 and won 30-24.
Junior Allyson Halls (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy) led the Dukes with 15 kills on .591 hitting along with six digs. Senior Bayli Stillwell (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Steamboat Springs) had 11 kills. Pierson finished with 20 digs while sophomore Kelsey McNamara (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) added 11. Sophomore setter Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) finished with 41 assists, four kills, and five digs.
In addition to Furlong's 16 kills and 11 digs, Lucas tallied 10 kills on .421 hitting with three blocks. Natalie Mullikin (Lebanon, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit) hit .346 with 11 kills and three blocks. Dylan Faulkner (Austin, Texas/St. Michael's Academy) had 43 assists and seven digs. Doane chipped in seven kills and 12 digs.
JMU will play its final match in Colorado Saturday evening against host Colorado State at 10 p.m. Eastern.
