HAMPTON, Va., Jan. 13, 2007 ? James Madison University went 1-2 on the second day of the 2007 Virginia Duals and earned a fourth-place finish in the eight-team American College Division on Saturday at the Hampton Coliseum.
JMU (5-15) opened the day with a tight 21-19 loss to the Apprentice School. The Dukes held a 16-9 lead when the Builders recorded a pin at 174 pounds and a decision at 184 to go up 18-16. JMU regained the lead with a John Halloway (Derwood, Md./Magruder) win at 197. However, Apprentice closed with a 3-0 win at heavyweight to clinch the semifinal win.
In addition to Halloway, the Dukes earned victories from 125 pound junior Louis Sweet (Stephenson, Va./James Wood), freshman Jimmy Mitchum (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial), sophomore Scott Yorko (Newport News, Va./Denbigh), and senior Jeff Jacobs Dumfries, Va./Forest Park). Yorko notched his second straight win by pin at 157 pounds in a time of 2:18. Mitchum had a 14-5 major decision at 141.
With the loss, the Dukes fell to the consolation bracket, where they collected a 60-0 forfeit win over Franklin and Marshall College.
That sent the Dukes to the third-place match, where JMU faced a rematch with SUNY Brockport, a team it defeated 21-14 on Friday. Brockport claimed the rematch by a 25-10 margin. JMU picked up wins from Sweet, 133 pound junior Brandon Luce (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney), and heavyweight freshman Patrick Finch (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee). Luce won with a 14-5 major decision.
JMU will return to the mat next Friday and Saturday in the Colonial Athletic Association Duals to be held at George Mason University.
