ATLANTA, Ga., Jan. 20, 2007 - Junior forward Terrance Carter (District Heights, Md./Largo) scored a game-high 20, including 15 during the final half, to lead James Madison to a 59-52 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory at Georgia State Saturday.
Carter hit on seven of 12 shots and had nine rebounds while playing a lead role in the Dukes' second straight win. He had game highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds Wednesday when JMU defeated Old Dominion. Saturday he scored half of the Dukes' final-half points and grabbed seven rebounds during the second period.
Saturday's win raised JMU's overall record to 6-12 and its CAA mark to 3-5 while Georgia State fell to 7-11 overall and 3-5 in the conference. The game was the teams' first meeting in Atlanta.
JMU took a 29-27 halftime lead after having a seven-point margin early during the period, and the Dukes upped their advantage to 43-34 with 11:01 left on a layup by freshman guard Pierre Curtis (Denver, Colo./East).
Georgia State, which scored five of its seven final-half field goals from three-point range, got as close as 47-44 with 6:25 to play, but JMU was still up 55-48 on sophomore guard Colbey Santos' (East Wareham, Mass./Tabor Academy) free throw with 35.6 seconds remaining.
Sophomore guard Joe Posey (Colonial Beach, Va./Notre Dame Academy) had a layup with 4:49 left for a 49-44 JMU lead, and Carter got the Dukes' next five points.
Georgia State pulled to within 55-51 on Norman Mitchell's three-pointer with 21 seconds left, but Santos hit on two free throws with 17.9 seconds remaining and Carter two with 2.5 seconds to play to preserve the Dukes' lead.
JMU shot only 41.1 percent (23-56) overall and had but one three-pointer, but the Dukes had a 34-20 rebounding advantage and committed only 10 turnovers to Georgia State's 15.
Curtis added 11 points, and sophomore forward Juwann James (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines) had 10 points and 10 rebounds, his first scoring-rebounding "double-double" of the season, for the Dukes. Santos also had seven points and six rebounds for JMU.
Lance Perique led Georgia State with 16 points and had four of the Panthers' seven three-point field goals. Georgia State shot 47.4 percent (18-38) from the field but got off 18 fewer shots than the Dukes. The Panthers had only six offensive rebounds.
JMU plays next in a 7 p.m. game Wednesday (Jan. 24) at Northeastern.
