MEN'S TENNIS DROP TWO AND WIN ONE AT VCU 4x1 INVITATIONAL

RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 22, 2007 - The James Madison University men's tennis team opened the spring season with at the VCU 4x1 Invitational over the weekend.

The Dukes dropped three matches to East Carolina with senior John Snead (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) picking up the lone victory for JMU by defeating Brian Walters in two sets 6-4, 6-0. Junior Carlin Campbell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) took his opponent Sam McSpadden into the third set before he fell 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The number one singles match was not completed.

Senior Brian Clay (Chantilly, Va./Westfield) and sophomore Brian Rubenstein (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) competed in the doubles match and fell 6-2, 6-1 to William Peeler and Aleksey Kochetov.

In the second match of the day, JMU defeated Drexel 3-0 behind victories from Snead and Clay on the singles side and a doubles victory by Campbell and Rubenstein. Snead defeated Joe Koebele 6-4, 6-2 and Clay defeated Harrison Clare 6-3, 6-1. Campbell and Rubenstein defeated Jarrod Popovice and Ayushya Wadhwan in two sets 6-3, 6-1. The other two singles matches were not completed.

On day two, the Dukes fell to fourteenth ranked and host team Virginia Commonwealth 5-0.

The Dukes next match is Jan. 26 at George Washington University.
