HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Oct. 7, 2007 ? James Madison University hit just .006 while Hofstra University posted a .232 mark to pick up the 3-1 home victory on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association women's volleyball at HU's Physical Fitness Center.
HU (10-8, 3-2 CAA) defeated JMU (10-8, 2-3 CAA) by game scores of 37-39, 30-18, 30-26, and 30-20. JMU dropped its third match in a row.
Four Hofstra players had double-digit kills and three had double-doubles in the victory. Amanda Beyersdorff had 14 kills and 10 blocks. Talita Silva added 14 kills and 12 blocks while hitting .545. Harmonie Calinda totaled 14 kills and 16 digs. Lauren Engle added 10 kills. Senior Shellane Ogoshi posted 53 assists for the Pride with eight digs. Katie Wilkerson added 14 digs.
Senior Allyson Halls (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy) had 20 kills to pace JMU's offense. Junior Michelle Johnson (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) was the only other player in double-figure kills with 10 along with five blocks. Freshman Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) had nine kills and seven digs. Junior setter Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) had 53 assists and eight digs. Senior libero Jena Pierson (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison) tallied 23 digs and moved into a tie for eighth in season digs with 368, reaching her freshman total from 2004. She now holds four of the top nine season dig outputs in JMU history.
In game one, JMU rallied from a 28-24 deficit to knot the score at 28-28. The team's had a back-and-forth affair with Hofstra holding five game points and JMU having four. Finally with the score tied at 37-37, Miles and Halls recorded a block followed by a Johnson kill for JMU to pull out the win.
After the Pride pulled out to a 14-9 lead in game two, JMU managed to keep it close with HU up 19-16. However, Hofstra scored 11 of the final 13 points for the 30-18 victory.
