CLEMSON, S.C., Dec. 7, 2007 -? Clemson built a 12-point lead in the second half and held off James Madison for a 69-60 win in women's basketball Friday evening at the Littlejohn Coliseum.
Clemson improved to 6-5 while the Dukes dropped to 6-2 with their second straight loss on the road.
JMU had rallied from 11 points down (19-8 at 12:27) in the first half to lead 31-27 with 3:36 left.
But the Tigers got three-pointers from three different players in the final 3:32, then opened the second half with six consecutive points to push their lead to 11, 42-31, at 18:35.
JMU got within six points seven times in the second half but could not close the gap further.
The Dukes shot a season-low 29.1 percent (23-79) from the floor and committed 18 turnovers, including eight in the opening 7:34 of the second period when Clemson took its 12-point lead.JMU hit only 47.8 percent (11-23) from the foul line.
Clemson hit on 47.3 percent (26-55) of its field-goal attempts, a season-high for the Tigers.Clemson entered the game shooting only 37.8 percent from the floor this season.
JMU senior guard Tamera Young (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) finished with a game-high 14 points and also led all players with a season-high 16 rebounds.Freshman center Lauren Jimenez (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) came off the bench for 11 points, and freshman guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) scored 10.
Clemson had a balanced scoring effort with four players in double figures.Redshirt sophomore guard Christy Brown (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) scored 11, and the Tigers got 10 points apiece from sophomore guard/forward Lele Hardy (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg), sophomore guard Morganne Campbell (Fairburn, Ga./Sandy Creek) and sophomore forward/center April Parker (Snellville, Ga.). The Tigers had a fast start in the first half and led the Dukes 19-8 with 12:27 left.Hardy led the run with seven points, and senior forward D'Lesha Lloyd (Columbia, S.C./Lower Richland) added four.
