COLLEGE PARK, Md., March 13, 2007 ? James Madison University scored 12 runs in the first four innings, including a six-run second to defeat the University of Maryland 13-6 in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday afternoon at Shipley Field.
JMU improved to 3-12 overall and won its second straight following a 10-game losing streak. Each of the two wins marks the first time this season that the Dukes have scored over 10 runs in a game. Maryland dropped to 11-5 overall and lost its second in a row.
The Dukes hit three home runs, including two by senior
Davis Stoneburner (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin). JMU also took advance of free passes, receiving six walks and a hit batter in the first three innings en route to 10-1 lead after three. The Dukes also swiped a season-best six bases on the day.
Stoneburner finished 2-for-5 with a season-high five RBIs. Junior
Kellen Kulbacki (Palmyra, Pa./Hershey) doubled and hit his team-best fourth homer of the season. He drove in two and scored twice. Senior
Mitchell Moses (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) had three hits and two RBIs while freshman
Alex Foltz (Mathias, W.Va./East Hardy) had two hits with one RBI. Junior
Joe Lake (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) was 1-for-4 with two walks and scored three runs.
Redshirt junior
Trevor Kaylid (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) earned his first victory in his first start of the season. He allowed four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. Freshman
Dustin Crouch (Amherst, Va./Amherst) tossed the final 3 2/3 innings to pick up his first career save and the first of the season for the Dukes.
Maryland freshman starter Nick Pearce (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha Catholic) lasted just 1 2/3 innings, surrendering six runs, four walks, and two hits to take the loss.
Senior Jon Greenwich (McLean, Va./Langley) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Terps. Sophomore Mike Murphy (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Junior Chad Durakis (Cockeysville, Md./St. Pauls) doubled twice and scored twice.
The Dukes got off to a hot start in the first inning with Lake walking and promptly stealing second. Stoneburner also walked and Kulbacki lined a 2-0 pitch to the right field corner to score one. After a strikeout, Moses lifted a sacrifice fly to right field for the second run. The inning marked the 12
th time this season that JMU has scored first.
The Terps wasted no time putting a run of their own on the board after leadoff hitter Palumbo singled through the left side, reached second on a wild pitch, and came around on a double to right by Murphy. Kaylid recovered to retire the next three batters to get out of the inning.
After
Dan Santobianco (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) was hit by a pitch with one down and Lake walked with two outs, Stoneburner skied his second home run of the season to left center for a 5-1 JMU lead, the first three-run shot of the season for the Dukes. Kulbacki walked on five pitches and redshirt freshman
Steven Caseres (New City, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) greeted relief pitcher Brett Tidball (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) with a single up the middle. Moses laid down a perfectly-placed bunt that third baseman Mike Murphy was unable to field, allowing Kulbacki to score the sixth run. After the Dukes loaded the bases, Bujakowski lined a two-run single to centerfield for an 8-1 JMU lead.
JMU added two runs in the third on a solo home run by
Kellen Kulbacki. It was his fourth homer of the season, all solo shots. The Dukes continued the two-out barrage with a Caseres walk, Moses single, and an RBI double by Foltz.
Two more two-out runs came in during the fourth on Stoneburner's second home run of the day and third of the season.
