ATLANTA, Ga., April 27, 2007 ? James Madison University pounded out a season-high 23 hits and hit four home runs to record a 15-9 win at Georgia State University in the opener of a Colonial Athletic Association baseball series on Friday evening at The Field at Panthersville.
JMU improved to 18-25 overall and 8-12 in the CAA. The Dukes won their fourth in a row, the longest winning streak of the season. They also won for the fifth time in six games and claimed their eighth win in the last 10 contests. JMU is averaging 12.5 runs per game during that 10-game span. GSU fell to 20-23 overall and 9-10 in conference. The Panthers have lost four in a row and five of six.
The win was the 300th career victory at JMU for head coach Spanky McFarland. He is 300-258-2 in 10 seasons with the Dukes. However, McFarland was not able to actually spend his 300th win in the dugout, as he was ejected in Wednesday's win at Virginia and CAA rules require an extra game suspension following any ejection.
Senior Davis Stoneburner (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) tied his season high with five RBIs on a pair of home runs. The two-run and three-run blasts gave him seven for the season and his second multiple-home run game. He also walked twice.
Redshirt senior Mitchell Moses (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) and redshirt-junior Joe Lake (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) each had four hits, two runs, and one RBI. Lake's four hits were a career high, while Moses set a season high and tied his career mark. Moses also stole two bases for the fourth time this season.
Redshirt freshman Steven Caseres (New City, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) was 3-for-3 with a two-run home run. Freshman Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) had two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run homer. Junior Kellen Kulbacki (Palmyra, Pa./Hershey) doubled, scored three times, and walked four times to increase his CAA lead for bases on balls to 44.
The Dukes had 23 hits, besting the previous season high of 17, which they reached on four previous occasions. Ten players had at least one hit and eight had multiple hits.
Redshirt sophomore Kurt Houck (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) picked up the win to improve to 4-6 with wins in each of his last four appearances as the Dukes won for the second straight Friday after opening the season 0-8 on Fridays. Houck allowed eight runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings. He hit three batters in the game as the JMU staff set a season high with four total.
Junior Drew Grant (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) took the loss for Georgia State after surrendering five runs on seven hits in two innings. The Panthers used six pitchers total with the bullpen combining to allow 10 runs in seven innings.
Junior Jean-Michel Rochon-Salvas (Longueuil, Quebec/Edouard Montpetit) was 3-for5 with three RBIs for the Panthers. Senior Eric Suttle (Marietta, Ga./The Walker School) also had three RBIs on a pair of hits. Senior Charlie Pelt (Roswell, Ga./Lassiter) added a pair of singles to become GSU's all-time hits leader with 234.
JMU mounted a two-out rally in the first inning. Kulbacki walked and moved to third on a high fly ball that landed on the left field line in between three Panther fielders. Browning then extended to a 10-game hitting streak with an RBI single through the right side. Moses followed with another single to the right to score sophomore Lee Bujakowski (Hopewell, Va./Hopewell).
The Dukes added three runs in the second inning, again all after two outs were recorded. Lake singled and Stoneburner followed with a two-run homer to left field. Kulbacki and Bujakowski hit back-to-back doubles to lead to the third run.
