ATHENS, Ohio, Aug. 25, 2007 ? Ohio University extended its home-court winning streak to 51 matches in a row with a 3-0 win over James Madison University on Saturday afternoon in the Hampton Inn Volleyball Challenge at the Convocation Center.
OU improved to 1-0 after winning by game scores of 30-20, 30-20, and 30-28. The Bobcats entered the season ranked 25th nationally in the American Volleyball Coaches Association top 25 poll and extended the nation's second-longest winning streak.
Sophomore Ellen Herman (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) had a double-double for the Bobcats with 10 kills and 12 digs while also adding five aces and two blocks. Senior Melissa Griffin (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall) had 13 kills with a .391 accuracy rate and five blocks. Junior Jill DeArmond (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) had 36 assists, five kills, and six digs.
JMU was led by freshman outside hitter Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) led the Dukes with 13 kills. Senior middle blocker Allyson Halls (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy) had eight kills and three blocks. Junior setter Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) collected 29 assists and eight digs. Senior libero Jena Pierson (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison) and sophomore Stephanie Waters (Gainesville, Fla./P.K. Yonge) each had nine digs.
JMU led 5-4 in game one before Ohio took over, vaulting to a 17-9 advantage and going on for the 30-20 win. Game two was tight at a 10-9 Bobcat lead when Ohio put together a 7-0 run to pull away and take the game 30-20 again. Game three was much tighter throughout and was tied at 25-25. Two JMU attack errors and two Ohio kills made it a 29-25 lead, and the Bobcats held on for the two-point win.
JMU will play its second of four tournaments next weekend in Davidson, North Carolina. The Dukes will play the host Wildcats in the Mizuno Wildcat Classic at 7:30 p.m. Friday night. JMU will then face Connectict at 10 a.m. Saturday followed by a 5 p.m. match against High Point.
