HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Jan. 5, 2008 ? Senior guard Antoine Agudio had a game-high 19 points, including a second-half field goal that put Hofstra in front to stay, as the host Pride beat James Madison 66-60 in men's Colonial Athletic Association basketball Saturday.
Playing for the first time in four games after suffering an ankle injury, Agudio hit on a jumper with 15:55 left to give Hofstra a 44-43 lead. The Pride went on to lead 49-43 at the end of a 9-0 scoring burst and survived a rally that got JMU to within 61-60 with just less than a minute to play.
Hofstra improved to 3-9 overall and to 1-2 in the CAA while JMU fell to 9-4 overall and to 2-1 in the league.
JMU pulled to within 61-60 on junior forward Juwann James's (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines) layup with 59 seconds left but got off only one more shot.
Hofstra's Darren Townes scored inside for a 63-60 Pride lead with 27 seconds left, and JMU junior guard Abdulai Jalloh (District Heights, Md./National Christian Academy) couldn't connect on a three-point attempt with six seconds to play after his team used timeouts at the 26- and 12-second marks.
Townes was fouled after rebounding JMU's final shot. He hit the first of a one-and one free throw chance with 2.4 seconds left and followed his second-shot miss with a rebound and layup for the game's final margin.
Hofstra grabbed a quick 12-3 lead, but JMU came back to lead 15-14 behind a pair of three-pointers by junior forward Joe Posey (Colonial Beach, Va./Notre Dame Academy). Hofstra went back up 27-22 before JMU rallied for nine straight points. Hofstra used a 7-0 run to lead 34-31, and the teams then settled for a 36-36 halftime tie.
