HARRISONBURG, Va., Nov. 16, 2008 ? Three James Madison players hit over .450 with at least eight kills in a 3-0 sweep of UNC Wilmington in the Colonial Athletic Association women's volleyball finale for both teams on Sunday afternoon in Sinclair Gymnasium.
JMU won by set scores of 25-22, 25-17, and 25-19 to finish the 2008 campaign at 13-18 overall and 6-8 in the league. It was the 200th career victory as a Division I head coach for Disa Garner, including 146 wins at JMU. UNCW ends its season at 6-23 overall and 0-14 in the CAA.
Senior Michelle Johnson (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) closed her career in fine fashion with 12 kills and .458 hitting along with five blocks and three digs. Freshman Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) hit .600 with 10 kills on 15 swings. Sophomore Kay Weninger (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) added eight kills on .500 hitting.
Senior setter Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) totaled 37 assists, nine digs and four kills. She finished the season as JMU's career assist average record holder at 11.38 assists per set. Freshman Leanna Heston (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) added 11 digs.
Lindsey Strucko had match-high honors for UNCW with six kills. Jacqueline Crane tallied 14 assists and Ashlyn Morris added 13 digs.
UNCW vaulted out to a 9-2 commanding advantage in set one before JMU began to chip away at the lead. The Dukes still trailed 16-10 when they went on a 9-2 run to take the lead. The Seahawks briefly tied it but the Dukes posted five of the next six points and then held on for the 25-22 win after a kill by sophomore Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown). Weninger had five kills and Johnson added four in the set.
JMU kept the momentum into set two and pulled out to a 12-5 lead. The Dukes never trailed in the set and UNCW got no closer than four points in a 25-17 JMU win.
