COLLEGE PARK, Md., Nov. 20, 2008 -- Nationally-ranked Maryland broke open a close game midway through the second half and posted a 90-76 win over visiting James Madison in women's basketball Thursday night at the Comcast Center.
The Terps, ranked 11th by Associated Press and tied for 15th in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25, improved to 2-1. JMU's record is now 1-1.
With the game tied 57-57 with 11:47 to play, the Terrapins used an 18-3 scoring run to build a 75-60 lead with 5:48 remaining. The Dukes got no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Dukes' sophomore guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) poured in a game-high 33 points, including five three-pointers. She hit 14 field goals, one below the JMU record.
Maryland senior All-America guard Kristi Toliver led her team with 27 points, and tallied eight of her points during the Terps' decisive second-half scoring run.
During that spurt Maryland shot 66.7 percent (8-12) from the field, while the Dukes hit on only one of six attempts and turned the ball over five times.
The 57-57 tie prior to the run was the sixth of the game, and Maryland's biggest lead in the first 32 minutes of play was seven points.
