JMU SOFTBALL GOES 1-1 TO OPEN UNCG SPARTAN CLASSIC

GREENSBORO, N.C., Feb. 15, 2008 ? The JMU women's softball team went 1-1 in the first day of the UNCG Spartan Classic Friday. The Dukes opened the season with an 8-0 loss to Cleveland State in five innings. In the second game, Madison beat UNC Greensboro 3-1.
Against Cleveland State, Vikings pitcher Amanda Macenko threw five shut out innings, giving up just one hit in the game. Macenko struck out seven batters and walked just one.
First baseman Lia Gordon went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and third baseman Natalie DeMatteis went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Vikings.
For JMU, sophomore centerfielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) managed the Dukes sole hit of the game. Junior second baseman Kaitlyn Wernsing (Clemmons, N.C./Park View) was the only other Dukes to reach base, going 0-for-1 with a walk.
Junior right-hander Meredith Felts (Greenville,N.C./J.H. Rose) struggled in her first outing, lasting just 3.1 innings. She gave up just five runs, four earned, on six hits, walked two and struck out two. She was relieved in the fourth inning by junior Shannon Outman (Gainesville, Fla./P.K. Yonge) with runners on second and third.
Felts fought through some control issues in the first after she walked the lead of batter, leftfielder Whitney Willard. Willard advanced to second on a passed ball but was caught in a run down and tagged out. After an error by freshman Melissa Hill (Santee, Cal./Westills) and another walk, catcher Haley Keller singled in a run. Felts escaped the rest of the inning with out giving up a run.
