SOFTBALL IMPROVES TO 2-1 WITH WIN OVER NIAGARA

GREENSBORO, N.C., Feb. 16, 2008 ? The JMU softball team picked up their second win of the season, defeating Niagara 5-3 Saturday at the UNCG Spartan Classic. The Dukes improved to 2-1 after opening the tournament 1-1 on Friday.
Madison opened the scoring in the second on junior catcher Julia Dominguez's (Sterling, Va./Park View) lead off home run to left field. Dominguez went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. She currently holds the JMU record for home runs with 18.
The Dukes would add another run in second when sophomore leftfielder Brittney Dyson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) singled to left and advanced to third on an error by the leftfielder. Sophomore centerfielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) would single through the right side to score Dyson.
In the third, Madison would add two more runs on a Dominguez two-run double to right. Junior second baseman Kaitlyn Wernsing (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) scored from third and senior first baseman Jenn Chavez (Upland, Cal./Upland) scored from second.
Wernsing would add an RBI single to centerfield in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Simons. Wernsing went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Junior Shannon Outman (Gainesville, Fla/P.K. Yonge) made her first start for JMU, going 5.1 innings and giving up 3 runs, two of them earned. She gave up five hits, struck out four and walked three.
Junior righty Meredith Felts would relieve Outman in the sixth, going 1.2 innings, giving up no hits, no runs and striking out four. She picked up her first save of the season.
