HARRISONBURG, Va., March 2, 2008 -- James Madison went on a 14-5 scoring run in the last 2:35 to seal a 76-63 victory over 11th-ranked Old Dominion in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.
JMU improved to 20-8 overall and 13-4 in conference play. ODU is 26-4 overall and 16-1 in the CAA after suffering its first league loss of the year. The Dukes' win marked the end of a 19-game Monarch winning streak.
In a game that had eight ties and nine lead changes, JMU took the lead for good on a three-pointer by senior guard Tamera Young (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) with 8:48 to play. That put the Dukes ahead 51-49 and began a run in which JMU outscored ODU 12-2 and out-rebounded the Monarchs 8-2 in a span of 3:39. ODU connected on only one of three field goals at the start of the run and then committed turnovers on its next four possessions.
Dukes' redshirt junior forward Nina Uqdah (Lanham, Md./Riverdale Baptist) scored four points in the run, two on a put-back off an offensive rebound and two more on free throws after she got an offensive rebound and was fouled. Freshman point guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) hit a three-pointer with 5:09 to play that pushed the JMU lead to nine, 60-51.
ODU then scored seven unanswered points to trim the margin to four, 62-58, at 2:49 on the block. Senior forward Shahida Williams (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X Shabazz) scored twice on put-backs and hit a foul shot, and freshman guard Shadasia Green (Patterson, N.J./Eastside) converted two free throws in the run.
In the final three minutes, the Dukes converted nine of 12 free-throw attempts, led by senior guard Jasmin Lawrence (Queens, N.Y./Francis Lewis),who was five-for-six at the line. JMU also got a layup from Young and a three-pointer by Evans in the closing seconds. Meanwhile, ODU was 0-for-6 from the field, including 0-for-3 from three-point range, and 3-for-6 at the foul line.
