SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER, WINS SERIES WITH GEORGIA STATE

PANTHERSVILLE, Ga., March 30, 2008 ? The James Madison softball team went 1-1 in a doubleheader with Georgia State in Colonial Athletic Association play at Bob Heck Field in Panthersville, Ga, Sunday.
Madison started out the day with an 8-7 loss but bounced back with a season-high 13 hits in a 14-0 win in five innings in game two.
Sophomore center fielder Courtney Simons had four hits (three doubles and a home run) scored four runs and drove in three in the two games to lead JMU.
In game two, JMU jumped all over GSU starter Ashley Cowan to score eight runs in the top of the first. Nine of the first 10 JMU hitters reached base, including Simons' third double of the day. The inning was capped off with back-to-back two-run singles by sophomore outfielders Brittney Dyson and Shannon Moxey.
The Dukes added two more runs in the third and four in the fourth to give the Dukes their final margin.
In the third, Simons connected on her second home run of the season, taking Cowan's 1-1 pitch down the right field line. Moxey scored on the two?run shot after leading off the inning with her team leading ninth double of the season.
Madison went on to add four more runs in the fourth. The Dukes got three straight singles by sophomore designated player Lauren Mernin, freshman shortstop Melissa Hill and freshman catcher Katie Spitzer. Spitzer's single scored junior Megan Forbes, who had entered the game for Mernin as a pinch runner. After another single, this time by Moxey, junior third baseman Amber Kirk wrapped up the JMU scoring with a two-run single to left.
