HARRISONBURG, Va., April 12, 2008 ? James Madison University scored in each of the first five innings, including a seven-run fourth, to record a 13-7 victory over the University of Delaware to complete the Colonial Athletic Association series sweep on Sunday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
JMU won its fourth in a row to improve to 25-8 overall and 15-3 in the CAA. The Dukes have swept four of their six conference series this season and are 8-1 in home CAA games. JMU also won its seventh straight home game against Delaware and took over the lead in the series 14-13. UD fell to 11-22 overall and 5-10 in the CAA.
Redshirt junior Kurt Houck (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) worked into the seventh inning and set a career high with 11 strikeouts, including six in a row and striking out the side in the fifth. It was the first time a JMU pitcher reached double-digit strikeouts since Ryan Reid fanned 10 Towson batters on May 6, 2006. Houck allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits to improve to 4-1 with his second victory of the week.
Freshman James Weiner (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) worked three innings to record his second save. He allowed one run with one strikeout. The 12 strikeouts combined gave the Dukes 38 total in the three-game series, their best three-game performance of the season.
JMU pounded out 17 hits with 16 in the first six innings. Redshirt sophomore Steven Caseres (New City, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) was 3-for-5 with a double, four RBIs and a run scored. Redshirt freshman Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) hit four singles in four at bats with a run and a RBI. Redshirt senior Joe Lake (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) had two hits, a double, a walk, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Sophomore Alex Foltz (Mathias, W.Va./East Hardy) went 3-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base, and three runs scored. Junior Brett Garner (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) homered, walked, drove in two, and scored twice.
