HARRISONBURG, Va., June 5, 2008 -- Former James Madison soccer player Kurt Morsink scored the decisive penalty kick in the Kansas City Wizards' win over the Colorado Rapids Wednesday night.
The former JMU All-America midfielder converted the PK in the overtime shootout, in which the Wizards outscored the Rapids 5-3. The score after regulation play and 30 minutes of overtime was 2-2.
The match, played in Shawnee Mission, Kan., was a play-in game for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. With the victory Kansas City qualifies for next month's round of 16.
"I'd (taken penalty kicks) in college and back in Costa Rica, but never at this level," Morsink was quoted in the Kansas City Star. "Once (Colorado's Facundo) Erpen missed (his team's fourth PK in the shootout), I knew I had to put it away.
"The most important thing is coach (Curt Onalfo) put his trust in a young player like me to take it. I couldn't let him or the team down."
"I always go to (the right) side. "(Colorado goalkeeper Preston Burpo) had gone to his left the two times before. You can't play a guessing game. You've just got to hit it hard and put it away."
